Why Living Soil?
Living soil allows us to grow cannabis by working with a self-sustaining biological system rather than constantly supplying plants with external inputs. Instead of feeding the plant directly, we focus on building and maintaining healthy soil so the plant can access the nutrients it needs throughout its growth cycle.
After harvest, plant material can be recycled back into the system through mulching and decomposition, returning organic matter to the soil and reducing waste. Many of the biological inputs used to maintain our beds can also be produced in-house, helping us reduce our dependence on purchased amendments while creating a more efficient and sustainable cultivation system.
At the heart of living soil is the soil food web: a diverse community of beneficial fungi, bacteria, worms, arthropods, and other microorganisms. Together, these organisms break down organic matter and convert nutrients into forms that plants can readily access. Worms and other
decomposers continually process material within the soil, while beneficial fungi and bacteria support nutrient cycling and help maintain a balanced growing environment.
Rather than replacing the soil after each crop, our goal is to continuously improve it. Regular soil testing helps us monitor nutrient levels and make targeted adjustments when necessary, allowing mature beds to remain productive through repeated cultivation cycles.
